A while back, after a really torrential rain, I was mowing around the huge oak tree in the front yard and stumbled over some glass sticking out of the ground -- turned out to be a whole, complete Bireley's Root Beer bottle. Then in that same area I unearthed a couple of Royal Crown bottles (RC Cola) and an actual ancient MoonPie wrapper! I know you can still get RCs but the bottles are totally different. And lots of Hires Orange bottle caps. Wow, the history. See, here in Coca-Cola land, this is huge. There was a whole different soft drink ethic. You'd say "You want some Coke?" but what you meant was, we got Pepsi, Orange Crush, root beer, ginger ale, etc. "Coke" just meant something fizzy with lots of sugar. I mean, there's still choice, but that was when drinking some Coke didn't always mean Coca-Cola. Aah, it's a southern thang. Probably a redneck thang. Never mind. Anyhow, I cherish those bottles.
