Look at — but don't touch! — my computer screen

File under "Things that make me crazy."

Why is it that so many people, looking at something on your computer, use their dirty, greasy, print-leaving index finger to show you things?

It's not a touch-sensitive screen, bozo!

Keep your cotton-picking fingers off my beautiful clean screen.

But I'm such a nice person I hold my fire and let them mess it up without uttering a single word.

Reason?

Once the first contact has occurred a screen cleaning is in order, so it really doesn't matter how much worse they make it.

Once they've left the premises, I get out my iKlear Apple Polish and Klear Kloth (top), official screen cleaner of

and get to work.

A pack of 12 costs $9.

I get similarly incensed when my PowerBook screen gets touched by grubby fingers, but I use a different cleaning technique. Most people keep extra windshield washer fluid around the house and it just happens to be the perfect compy cleaner: it contains no ammonia which will destroy the screen (esp. if you have a non-glossy finish) and is less annoying to deal with than sudsy water. Just wipe it down and you're done. It's great for general cleaning of the aluminum body, too. I mean, I love Apple and third-party products and accessories as much as the next guy, but iKlear just seems one step too close to ridiculous, esp. at $9/pack.

Oh, and for laptop users, finger grease from the keyboard can actually degrade the screen over time as well, marking it up everytime you close the clamshell. My machine came with a sheet sandwiched between the keyboard and screen when I first opened it. I held onto that sheet and make sure it's there everytime I close it. I marked one corner to ensure the same orientation each time I use it (the same side of the sheet touches the keyboard each time) and I'm convinced, 27 months after purchase, that this care is why my screen still looks as good as the day I took it out of the box. I wish I was this obsessed with things other than my computer.
